Nursing and Midwifery (BCur)
Nurses and midwives care for patients, give medication, support doctors and deliver babies. South Africa has a shortage of nurses. It is a regulated profession: you must study at an accredited institution and register with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
Medical Practice (MBChB)
Doctors diagnose and treat illness. Medicine is a six-year degree (MBChB) followed by internship and community service, and doctors register with the HPCSA. Entry is very competitive.
Pharmacy (BPharm)
Pharmacists make sure people get the right medicine safely. They work in community pharmacies, hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry. You need a four-year BPharm and registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC). Pharmacist assistants are a shorter route in.
Early Childhood Development (ECD) Practitioner
ECD practitioners care for and teach children from birth to six in crèches, preschools and Grade R. These years shape a child's whole life. There is high demand in communities across South Africa.
STEM Teaching
STEM teachers teach science, technology, engineering and maths. South Africa needs many more strong maths and science teachers. Teachers need a teaching qualification and registration with SACE.
Medical Technology and Radiology Support
Medical technologists test blood and samples in laboratories; radiographers take X-rays, CT and MRI scans. Both are regulated by the HPCSA and need formal study, but there are support roles such as phlebotomy and lab assistance.
